Taking the school apart
A small group activity that begins to look at the detail of how the school works.
aims
This activity builds on ‘The same but different’ activity and should probably be done around the same time. The aim is to use the same approach but to look at the school. Again in small groups the team deconstruct the school in the same way as they did after the tour using a 2x2 grid to list Spaces, People, Activities and Objects in the school.
a case study from our project
Equipped with an understanding of how to deconstruct a space and critique it, the groups of 3-4 worked from memory to list the different elements of their school and began to discuss how things work. They identified problems that they hadn't really seen before. In the groups we tried to unravel why things worked the way they did and what factors shaped the decisions that somebody - at some point - must have made.
