Synthesis Phase

Learning by doing, making decisions, building consensus, turning ideas into practical solutions

SYNTHESIS means bringing things together. During this stage we'll decide which ideas are best and combine the ideas we have into a final solution. We'll have to do this with the help of the people we need to get involved to ensure the final solutions will work for those who need them.

The hardest part about SYNTHESIS is saying goodbye to ideas that you like - but decisions have to be made. Despite the need to make decisions, SYNTHESIS is still a really creative phase because you often have to solve tricky problems which sometimes means a little more discovery. You also have to find interesting and informative ways of helping other people to use what you've designed.

It's also really important that we decide on some success criteria - a checklist of things that we think are important to the success of the design solutions that we've chosen. We often come up with criteria in our minds to help us decide whether something we've plan (or have to do) is going to be a success. Will I like the people? Will they like me!? Will I feel embaressed? Will I like the food? Will I make new friends? Often things are better than we expect them to be. We'll come up with some criteria to measure the success of our new solutions - this way we'll know what effect the project is having on people within the school.

At the end of this stage we'll have what we need to set up and run some new solutions to the design challenges that we chose. This could be a plan to rearrange how a space works, a new way of communicating with each other or a new way of using the school day.

Things that we'll have at the end of this phase:

Some things that we can try out.

Some criteria that we can use to measure the success of our experiment.

A plan of action for the next stage
